Yuppers. I always said, first and foremost, Medium is a social media site and then a writing site. And that is perfectly fine. That is another reason why my “reward” in the hamster article announced about me indicating a desire for a “better” effort both on and off Medium. So you my friend are so correct in your last reply.🥰👍
I believe since Medium already pays writers ( the amount of that pay for this one point is not relevant) then improving that pay level will not destroy the social media/writing pleasure of the site. Because. My idea involves a Menu of writer revenue generating solutions. Each item on the menu is participation optional. Easily one could opt to do nothing, same way some already opt out of the MPP.
Alternatively a writer could opt in to every item on the menu. All total individual choice.
If anyone makes a choice to create a serious revenue stream only on Medium, you know I agree that is a huge risk. Yet that does not excuse Medium from working to enhance comp for hard work, because again, writing is a profession whether or not that designation is of importance to all participants.
Yet, I do not think that enhanced compensation comes from demands only. There are many reasons why, for Medium in particular( yeah, The Verge article again), self funding ways to pay writers makes a lot of sense.
Then we have job loss during a pandemic and all those needing professional writing comp now because before there was a full time job.
For quite some time many writers have been thankful for small amounts, because, well, better than nothing.
And sure that is true, $10.00 IS better than zero. I cannot stay in this vein though. 1. Previous career and 2. Back to professionalism/writing/education/time/integrity/research…all that and more goes into writing. The pay needs to, on Medium and elsewhere, more closely match the effort.
