I am only this far in reading your excellent article, Darcy. But I had to comment on the highlighted line above.

Very, very often women are directly and indirectly counselled to feel grateful for amounts they are paid. Regardless if it’s paltry or less than an identically qualified man’s earnings for the exact same work.

Women are indirectly and directly shamed for pointing out the discrepancy. Nice girls are just happy for what they get, is one of the thoughts. Or “You’re complaining? Look at how much more you make as compared to Anna down the hall “ ( of course in this example Anna is the receptionist and you are a middle manager…)

Then you have the societal tabo about women discussing money. Not ladylike.

I could give you so many examples of people I have actually heard saying this. Bosses, grandmothers, colleagues…it goes on and on.
