This is another good part: The gender equality behind this decision is what I love most.
One of the biggest challenges for humans is to question (in context of where the world is today) these traditions, assumptions, habits, stereotypes,(you name it) that we have glommed on to for…um…way too long.
May I add a teensy other thing to the list? It’s a tiny one, yes. However, I think a whole bunch of little things do add up over time to create something bigger than we want it to be.
It’s the phrase maiden name. Used of course only in relation to women. More often I hear the words birth name substituted for maiden. I do prefer that.
For me, maiden connotes the weak damsel in distress from King Arthur tales or worse: that horrible, dated old maid label for an unmarried women.
Or maybe that’s just my interpretation. Would love to hear your thoughts, Gillian Sisley.
