Hello and welcome to Medium. Great question you asked in your opening.
My answer is a firm “No.”
Those of us, here for a few years, understand that following on its own is NOT enough. If someone follows a writer without reading and engaging in that writer’s content then what is the purpose in the “follow”?
True, a big total follower number looks impressive, but really means little without reading/claps/highlighting and comments.
In my case, when I get notified that someone has followed me I do not follow back unless they have read and engaged with me. Also I check their profile and catalogue and read their work to decide if their topics/writing are of interest to me .
If not, I do not follow back.
While Medium can be, to some extent, called a social media site, it is meant to be a quality writing site with sincere writer/reader engagement.
Hope this helps you and your writing journey. Sending very best wishes.
