Hello again Lisa Daum. I really liked and enjoyed this article and the empathy you have for people of all sizes. This is so well written. I especially like this part:
“Is it human nature to have less empathy for those who are different from us? Probably. I wish that wasn’t true, but there seems to be too much evidence to the contrary. Sexism, racism, class (cold) wars, and the way we treat non-human animals clearly demonstrates this.”
Lisa, as I read this article you wrote “ Conversations of a Thin Person” I refelected back to my comments I sent to you a few hours ago about your poem “ The Flowers”. I was worried that perhaps I misunderstood your poem or that you would mind my ( intended respectful and kind) encouragement to consider older people and stamp out “ ageism” along with all the other “ isms” you note above.
I see from what you wrote in this “thin people” article that yes, of course, you would see my point about all the older persons I have referenced that I encountered in my business life. Yes…I am certain you would want to include them.
This also leads me to a discussion David Caracciolo. And Kat Kou. and I were having this morning about this terrific Medium essay Kat just wrote called “ Is Facebook a Toilet.” ( freakin’ A title , huh)
I would love to hear your thoughts on Kat’s article. Do you think that Facebook, insta, snap and the others have fostered this place where many have arrived? Where celebrities get more likes( read: attention) …way way WAY more likes than a charity attempting to raise funds for starving local children? Or. As you so aptly wrote:
“Is it human nature to have less empathy for those who are different from us?”
Because, I wonder, whether social media, being as pervasive as it is, has taught us not to dare to look… even one sixteenth of an inch below the surface?
Sure would like to hear your take, Lisa, on all this: Kat’s article, agesim from my earlier comment to your poem, The Flowers. All this meshed with the wonderful synopsis. you just wrote about people-of-different-body-size. PODBS…hmmmm😀
