No, it doesn’t happen much anymore but many wives still take a back seat to their more successful husbands. That has to change.

A friend, very successful in her career, retired very early and later missed her work so much that she accepted a new partnership at a large firm. There were headlines and more about her return. As I congratulated her she nodded in the direction of her (equally, in my opinion) successful husband and she said to me “ I hope you know that I do not HAVE to work”….

I will never forget that exchange. She was so successful that I figured she just plain ol’ missed her work and couldn’t wait to be there again. Her need to make certain that hubby’s ego wasn’t damaged and that I knew he had bucks…. Sheeesh, I just don’t think that way.
